QUOTES FROM REVIEWS, ARTICLES, AND USERS
_________________________________________________________________
". . . a quick, thorough way for two pigskin nuts to lock
their strategic horns over a couple frosties (drinking with the
A.I. is NOT recommended)."
- Computer Gaming World, August 1, 1992
"It's a great game for armchair quarterbacks because it lets
you try out plays you always knew would work but nobody had the
guts to call . . . There are options galore . . . And the game
keeps stats like you wouldn't believe . . . My favorite feature
was the Tendency Tracking System . . . this game does an
excellent job of recreating the drama, strategy, suspense, and
frustration of real football . . . the computer, incidentally,
calls an excellent game and makes a very challenging opponent
. . . If you would rather outwit than outmaneuver an opponent,
you'll enjoy Field General . . . it's a lot of fun."
- Bud Sadler, Shareware Update, October '92
"FIELD GENERAL brings the gridiron, in all its gory glory,
to computer . . . We learned a lot about the game and had a good
time in the process."
- Noah Matthews, Knight-Ridder News Service
"Love the chalkboard screen! . . . It's the best game I've
played."
- Ted Lujan, Texas user
"TTS [Tendency Tracking System] is great concept, so is
TOPSTATS [all-time game records feature]"
- Rob Marino, New Jersey user
"I am delighted with my . . . copy of FIELD GENERAL . . .
the game is great . . . FIELD GENERAL has the potential to be the
best of all sports games"
- Lawrence Pollane, New York user
"FIELD GENERAL is the closest thing to pro football action
off the playing field!"
- Scott Bullock, Texas user
"[T]he best football game I've seen yet!"
- Robert Johnson, California user
"Thanks for the GREAT game!"
- Ray Ross, Maine user
"I feel it is the best football simulation program I have
used."
- Mike Nutting, New York user
"GREAT PROGRAM . . . Every time I play FIELD GENERAL, I love
it more and more . . . what a great game!"
- Matt Willms, Wisconsin user
"Excellent software! It's obvious that an incredible effort
was put into this game, with great attention to details only a
football fanatic would think of!"
- Robin Lynn Kroll, Colorado user

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS SHAREWARE VERSION AND THE
REGISTERED VERSION OF FIELD GENERAL
_________________________________________________________________
The following is a list of differences between this version
and the version you will receive upon sending in your
registration:
* This version makes only 5 pro football team characteristic
files available to users compared to the full 28 of the
registered version.
* Because of the limited number of teams, only short (8 game)
seasons may be created.
* Only the 1992 season stats are included with this version.
* The program "PROGAMES.EXE", where all 28 teams compete in
the same season, is a demo only and does not allow teams
run by human players to compete in the seasons it creates.
Normally, users select which teams should be automated and
which teams should be run by human players. In the regular
version, it is possible for 28 users to compete against one
another in the same season!
* Since there are only 5 teams to choose from, season play
is restricted to only those 5 teams, so post-season
matchups aren't as realistic as in the registered version.
* Users have access to only select plays on offense & defense.
Available plays will be highlighted in white on the help
menus. Automated teams have access to all plays.
* Users may play short games (7 minute quarters), but not
regulation length games (15 minute quarters).
* The quick playing modes are disabled.
* You do not have a choice of endzone colors.
* You cannot change the rate of turnovers generated.
* The home field advantage factor is always activated.
* Ability to save games is disabled.
This version was created so users can sample the game to see if it
is to their liking. Please read the file "SHR_WARE.DOC" to learn
more about the Shareware concept. This is a fully functional game
with some reduction in features to create registration incentive.
The new 1994 rule changes are included in this software. Enjoy this
version of FIELD GENERAL!

EARNING DISCOUNTS ON FIELD GENERAL UPGRADES
_________________________________________________________________
Once a user becomes a REGISTERED user, the user is eligible
for FIELD GENERAL upgrade discounts for every registration he
brings to rbm software. To earn a discount on your next FIELD
GENERAL upgrade, a registered user must do the following:
introduce the SHAREWARE version of FIELD GENERAL to a friend,
encourage the friend to register with rbm software, and have the
friend indicate on his FIELD GENERAL registration form that he
heard about the game through the registered user (you). Name,
address, and user number is needed to verify you as a registered
user. Once this information is verified, rbm software will send
you a coupon good for $3.00 off your next FIELD GENERAL upgrade!
By getting 8 friends to register, you end up getting back the
original cost of FIELD GENERAL and enough friends who are
registered users to participate in sanctioned rbm software
computer football tournaments (see file "TOURNEY.DOC"), and
rbm software ends up with 8 more registrations! A winning
proposition for all!

GETTING STARTED
_________________________________________________________________
INSTALLATION:
Welcome to FIELD GENERAL! FIELD GENERAL is a professional
football simulator programmed for IBM computers and compatibles
with VGA. A hard disk is needed to unpack and run this software.
The VERY FIRST thing you need to do is make at least one
backup of the FIELD GENERAL distribution disk (2 backups are
preferable). This simple action will guard against the loss of
information needed to run FIELD GENERAL. Consult your DOS manual
on how to use DOS's "diskcopy" command if you have any questions
on how to make a backup disk.
FIELD GENERAL'S executable and data files have been archived
so they would fit on the 360K, 5 1/4 inch distribution disk. These
files are archived in the self-extracting files "ARCHIVE1.EXE",
"ARCHIVE2.EXE", "ARCHIVE3.COM", and "ARCHIVE4.EXE". To install
FIELD GENERAL, type "install" at the system prompt and follow
directions. The installation program will unpack and copy all
files to the desired directory on your hard disk. (NOTE: Be sure
to instruct the installation program to copy the FIELD GENERAL
files to your hard disk - usually drive C).
RUNNING FIELD GENERAL:
1) Be sure to read the description for the file
"SCR_MELT.COM". This description is found in
Appendix A in the User's Manual, file "GENERAL.DOC",
and contains important information which may pertain
to you and your computer system.
2) Read all files with the extensions ".DOC" and
".TXT", especially the files "GENERAL.DOC"
and "PLAYS.TXT". The documentation files with the
extension ".WP" are doc files in WordPerfect format.
3) Make sure the hard disk you are running FIELD
GENERAL from has some extra memory, about 120K, so
FIELD GENERAL has room to create several files
during program execution.
4) Type "FOOTBALL" at the system prompt to begin play.
FIELD GENERAL UPGRADES:
See file "UPGRADE.DOC" to see how you can obtain upgraded team
characteristics data files for all professional football teams in
future years!
